Hi Room Three Sam's Gran here again. Thought you might like to hear some things I learnt about Amsterdam. They have a population of about 840,000 people but they estimate there is over 1 million bicycles! They are everywhere and you really have to be careful you don't get run over by some of them. They have dedicated cycle lanes to ride in but pedestrians have to cross them & the cyclists come fromany direction. The city has over a hundred kilometres of canals running through it and the last time they cleaned up the canals they found over 1400 bikes on the bottom along with sewing machines, refridgerators & allsorts of other things. It costs a lot of money to park a car in the city - 10 euros an hour (about $20.00) so the next time mum complains about putting money in the parking meter at home tell her parking is cheap! We have left Amsterdam now and are in Germany. Today we will visit Cologne. I will write back again soon

Hi its Room Three here! We have just read your comment and thought it was fantastic! We learnt some new things about Amsterdam. Thank you for your comment it was really kind of you. We had a really big frost this morning and are wondering what it is like over the other side of the world at the moment. The children are wondering if Germany has any beaches like NZ because we know that some countries are surrounded by land not water like NZ!

Hi Room Three. Brrrr those frosts sound really chilly, I am not missing them at all!! Yesterday we were in Bamberg, Germany and it was 29 degrees. Today we visited Nuremberg. It was a bit cooler with a few spots of rain but still very pleasant. As we are on a river cruise I haven't seen any beaches. People do swim, boat and waterski in areas set out along the river for them to do so. I wouldn't like to swim in it though as it is very dirty looking. We are very spoiled with our rivers in New Zealand. The rivers we have been on so far are the River Rhine and the River Main. At the moment we are on a man made canal called the Main Danube Canal. This was built so that ships as big as ours could travel between the Rivers Main and Danube. It is 171 kms long and has 16 locks on it to pass through. About an hour ago we went through the biggest of them all. It was nearly 25metres tall! The ship goes into the lock and the gate closes behind it. Then water is let into the lock from the other end and as the levels rise the ship rises too until it reaches the same level as the river ahead. When the level is right the front gate opens and we sail through. Very ingenious. Soon we will be going through locks that work the opposite way and we will be dropping in height. The canals are 12 metres wide and our ship is 11.4 metres wide so there is very little spare room on either side! Yesterday the captain made a bit of a mistake and we hit one side of a canal. The crew were out very quickly with paint brushes covering up the scrape!
Thanks for writing back to me, hope you are enjoying hearing about my trip. Sheryll Wylie.

Thanks for your information about the locks. We found it really interesting. We had never heard of them before. We drew a picture diagram to understand. We were amazed to hear about how there are gates in the river.

Hi Room Three. Sam's Gran here again. It's been a while since I wrote to you but we are still overseas. We arrived at Budapest on June 14 and left the ship the next day. Budapest is a huge city divided by the River Danube. The old part of the city is called Buda and the new part is called Pest. It is very beautiful at night with all the buildings along both sides of the river lit up with colourful lights. We were taken from the cruise ship early in the morning to catch a plane to Prague in Hungary it was very hot there and very crowded with thousands of tourists like us. Next we flew to Dublin, Ireland. We grabbed a rental car and drove to Galway. It was very wet that day but the cars were still travelling at 120kms/hour along the motorway! We went around the coast from Galway to Westport & then inland to a place called Glenties. This was where Sam's Great Great Great Grandmother was born!! From there we went to Ballymena stopping at the Giant Causeway along the way. This was a really unique basalt rock formation along the coastline. It looked like someone had carved huge square rock columns and stacked them up on their ends at different heights. Next we went to Belfast, dropped the car off and flew to Edinburgh in Scotland. We went to the Royal Highland Show and saw lots of very funny looking sheep and many different breeds of cattle. Some of the sheep were small, very black animals with 4 horns!! One curved horn over each ear and two straight horns growing out of the top of their heads! You would have to be very careful when you shore them that they didn't use their horns like kebab sticks and stick into your legs. The next day we went to Edinburgh castle for a look. One of the cannons there used to fire a cannon ball that weighed 150 kgs and it could hit a target nearly 3 kms away!! After that we went to Peterhead and this was where my Geandad was born so that makes him Sam's Great Great Grandad. From there we drove through Inverness and down past Loch Ness. We looked for the Loch Ness monster but saw no sign of it - maybe the Loch was too rough that day! That night we stayed at a place called Cairnlarich. Today we drove down to a place just out of Maybole and visited a dairy farm. These people are what is called tenant farmers. They lease ground from people who own a huge estate. The original house on the dairy farm is over 200 years old and is made of stone. It is just used for storage now but is still in very good condtion for its age. The dairy farm is very different to the big dairy farms at home. They have only 300 cows and their milking shed is called a parlour, you can only milk 16 cows at a time there so it would take a long time to milk all their cows. The calves are over 6 months old before they ever go outside. That didn't seem quite right to me. We have a couple more days here in Scotland before we head to England to go on a canal boat for a week i will write again about that as it should be quite fun. Sheryll Wylie
