Measuring Length

Today we learned about using metres to measure length. We first of all discovered the importance of using standard measures like metres. We found out that measuring using our feet didn't work if we wanted to give the information to someone else because our feet are all different sizes!
We pretended we were pirates and Miss McKenzie told us the treasure was buried 12 steps from the crooked palm tree. The problem was that when we measured out 12 of our steps we were in the wrong place because Miss McKenzie's feet are bigger than ours! We had to think of a different unit to use. We thought of metres!

Once we had learned how big a metre is we used metre rulers to draw out a pirate ship that is 10m in length and with a 5m mast. This was quite a big task! But we got there in the end!

We are learning to tell the time!

We have been learning to read and make O'Clock and Half Past times this week.

Multiplication Madness

These clever kids were making up word problems to fit with the number sentences they were given. They challenged a partner to draw a picture to match their word problem and then solve the problem by skip counting.

There are 6 rivers and each river has 5 stones in it. How many altogether? 

I had 7 rugby balls and each rugby ball had 2 designs on it. How many designs are on the rugby balls altogether? 

I have 6 soccer balls and each ball has 2 spots. How many spots are there altogether?

Jelly Bean Maths

On Friday we were challenged to create our own tally chart and bar graph all by ourselves (without help from Miss McKenzie) to show which jelly bean colour was most common in our own wee pile of jelly beans! We even got to eat them after wards!!

Maths: Statistics

We are getting pretty clever at making and reading bar graphs. This week we were challenged to collect our own data and record this using tally marks and then create a class strip graph. Miss McKenzie wanted to know which car colour was most common we sat at the school and recorded the colours of cars that went past. Next we made the strip graph. It was huge!!
